Your wedding is a special day. You’ll cherish the memories of your ceremony and reception for the rest of your life. Naturally, you want to ensure that every detail is planned with care. And as your Connecticut Master Certified Wedding Planner, I want you to have the most magical day of your lives!
For some couples, traditional wedding vows are an important piece of the wedding ceremony. It’s a connection to their culture and their families. But a growing number of engaged couples are choosing to write their own vows.
But even if writing your own vows sounds nice, it might also feel intimidating.
So today, let’s talk about how to write personalized wedding vows!
Think About Your Partner
Before you do anything else, take some time to think about your partner.
Write down a list of all of their best traits and the things you love most about them. Make sure that you include the little things–the things they’ll be surprised you noticed.
Dig into your “whys” for each of the things on your list. You love that they’re super organized because they make your house a comfortable place to live. You love their obsession with that niche interest because it brings you joy to see them so passionate about something.

Reflect On Your Journey
You didn’t get here overnight. Your lives have had so many ups and downs to bring you to the point of planning a wedding together, so don’t forget to think about your relationship journey as you write your wedding vows!
Think about the things that happened in your life before meeting your partner and how those events impacted the start of your relationship.
How did you meet? Did any of your loved ones play a role in your meeting? When did you know that they were “the one?”
If you ever faced a difficult period in your relationship, especially if your friends and family watched you go through it, you may wish to include it as part of your journey. If you lost your job and considered breaking up to take a new job across the country, don’t be afraid to talk about it.
The highs and lows are all a part of your shared story–and in the end, you’re sharing your vows in front of the people who love you most, so it’s all a part of the celebration!
Seek Out Inspiration
You don’t have to try to do it all on your own just because you’re choosing to write personalized vows. It’s okay to get inspiration from other sources. In fact, I encourage it!
Watch videos of other couples reading their custom vows to find out what you like and don’t like. Read poetry and novels. Listen to music. Revisit your favorite movies. Romantic sentiment is all around you and waiting to be used as your wedding vow inspiration!
Don’t be afraid to incorporate specific quotes that remind you of your partner or represent your relationship. Well-known quotes make especially good additions to wedding vows.

Look Toward the Future
You’ve been through so much to bring you to your wedding day, but you still have so much life ahead of you.
Think about what you want your shared life to look like. How do you want to spend your first year? What do you hope to accomplish in five years, or ten years?
Write down your vision for your shared life and incorporate it into your vows. Talk about your goals, hopes, dreams, and the promises you are making to your new spouse. You’ll set the tone for the future and show your partner and your loved ones that you are in it for the long haul.
Share a Personal Story
Do you have a good story that shows what your relationship looks like? Is there a story that you feel exemplifies who your partner is? Include it (even just a shortened version) in your wedding vows!
Your vows are personal, so don’t shy away from the stuff that means the most to you–even if it isn’t traditional.
Talk to Your Partner
Lastly, don’t forget to speak with your partner in advance about how to write personalized vows. It’s a good idea to make sure you and your soon-to-be spouse are on the same page about what you’re writing.
If your partner only writes a paragraph or two, you probably don’t want to write three pages.
And if your partner is less comfortable with sharing intimate details about their personal life, you should know before writing your vows.
Just make sure you both have a general idea of the tone and content of what the other is writing. It’s the best way to ensure everyone feels loved and understood on one of the most important days of your lives.
